Random thoughts on independent publishing and e-books

Recently at my day job, a local reporter and columnist, I have been interviewing quite a few locals who have been self publishing. The world is opening so that everyone with the dream to have their words heard can do just that. Whether it is publishing with one of the dozen new e-book publishers on the net, self publishing, publishing with vanity press or sending their books to a more traditional publishing company.

If I've learned anything doing this blog, it is that just because an author chooses to self publish or go the e-book route it doesn't automatically mean the book is bad or terribly written. It also doesn't mean the books are all erotic, which I heard stated more than a few times.

Just last week I interviewed a woman from my home town that couldn't get a romance book published -- not because it was written poorly, she had dozens of letters from publishers asking her to contact them again at a later date-- because her book was a Christian historical taking place in WWII and the market didn't call for that kind of book at the time. She waited nine years before the book was published, through a US based Christian publisher and already it is a great success for her.

Some people don't want to wait that long. They want to get recognition for doing something they love. I found it is stated best in the front pages of Jordan Castillo Price's recent book, Spanish Fly Guy, where she wrote a letter to her readers that I thought I would share.

"Dear reader,
We are witnessing the start of a huge shift in the publishing industry. Before 2003, if I wrote a story that wasn’t corporate America’s idea of What Deserves to be Published, the best I could have put together was a photocopied ‘zine that I distributed at whatever comic shops could be coerced into keeping a few copies on consignment.

The advent of epublishing and print-on-demand has changed that. Big time. We’re on the cusp of a meritocracy of ideas, where books sink or swim based on what readers want, rather than what corporate marketing folks think will sell. Every time you choose to buy from a small, independent publisher or self-published author, you’re shaping the availability of future books.

By saying “yes” to the indies, you become a patron of the arts, and you ensure the author has a paid mortgage, food on the table, a decent internet connection...in short, you’re contributing directly to that author’s paycheck and making sure he or she can keep writing!

If you enjoy this book, you can make even more of a difference. Blog about it, tweet about it, post reviews, and tell your friends. The more you spread the word about the indie works you enjoy, the more support you’ll funnel our way.

Thank you very much for buying an independent book. It does make a difference.

Here are the details for Jordan's book:
Spanish Fly Guy
Author: Jordan Castillo Price
Series: Petit Morts #5
ISBN: 978-1-935540-04-5

Description:
JP McMahon cruises into the small, oceanside town of Brightside hoping to score a bed for the night and a few dollars to fill the Miata’s gas tank. He discovers that cell phones and Internet are non-existent, and that without access to matchmaker sites and Craigslist, the local newspaper's personal ads are booming.

He cooks up an unlikely scam, a foul novelty concoction called Spanish Fly. He also finds an unlikely accomplice in Ryan, the quiet local kid at the copy shop with a flair for designing irresistible labels.

Spanish Fly proves popular—almost too popular—and JP suspects his luck is about to turn. But that “little voice” inside tells him to stick around Brightside just a tiny bit longer….

For more of Jordan's books check out her website at: www.jcpbooks.com.

You may not like Jordan's book or the next e-book or self published book you pick up. On the other hand you may not like the next big publishing house book you pick up either. However, there are some great writers out there that for one reason or another just haven't been picked up by the big houses. It can't hurt to give them a try. You might find you have another favorite author on your list.

Rance has wanted Jade for years, but he has stayed away because he didn't want her hurt by his evil grandmother. Now he can't wait any longer to be with her. He will do whatever it takes to protect her and make her his.

Jade has watched Rance from afar. She doesn't believe she has a chance with the handsome man, but a girl can dream. When Rance starts showing her that he wants more, she can't quite believe that he has anything other than protecting her in mind, but Rance shows her that it is much more than that. He wants forever.

I have a fondness for books that take place in New Orleans, my favorite city. I enjoy books where the author offers a handsome man with a Cajun accent who uses all the romantic French slang that only a real Cajun can do well. Shana does a great job of presenting the romance of the city and the sexy men we all would love to meet there.

This story is part of a series and I wish I had read the books before this one. I enjoyed this book with out reading the others, but I can see that it really is a must to get to know all the characters. I was a little disappointed in the mystery side of the book, as I like to figure out who is the culprit in the crimes committed and I found that there weren't enough clues to figure out the surprise ending. Other than that though, Shara Azod is a wonderful writer, painting a great picture for readers to follow and with very well done bedroom scenes.

I really fell in love with Rance. He's the type of strong, tortured character that you just want to take in your arms and make feel better after the all the wrongs that have been done to him by the evil grandmother.

Description:
Rance Chevalier had a lot to hide. But not even the darkness of his past can stop him from claiming the woman who set his body and soul on fire. He would fight his own past, the unseen threat to her life and even his own flesh and blood who thinks to take her for his own to make Jade forever his.

The difference between this and many of the Harlequin type books with this subject matter is once you leave the office and head to the bedroom. Fran Lee is great at making love scenes and her characters come sizzling off the pages in Jillian's Job.

A trip to Aspen to “rescue” Mike from the clutches of the latest woman seeking to sink her claws into him, an excess of champagne to fortify her, and she tells him what she thinks of his high-handed tactics. She’s quitting. Again.
So how the hell did she end up in bed with him in a Tahoe honeymoon suite, naked?

Why can’t she recall how her signature got on that marriage license?
Mike discovers talents he never knew Jill possessed. Now he has her right where he wants her. And he wants her again…and again. In his bed and under him. But it’s not all about the lust, and if he gets his way, Jillian won’t be leaving his side or his bed—ever.

Genre: Contemporary/Mystery
Publisher: Lyrical Press

YYYYY

Nikki is upset to see her friends dying because of a tainted drug that has been going around the sex club her ex-husband secretly owns. She understands all too well the reasons why some women need to take the drug to help them forget the life their husband's are making them lead. So rather than sitting around and watch more people die she has decided to do something about it.

Nikki's shy and not usually as bold as she used to be, but she wants to change all that and make a difference.

Josh can't believe it when she see the woman of his dreams on the dance floor at the sex club he's working undercover in. Before she can ruin his cover he decides to go and get reacquainted. There is no way he is going to let her get hurt and be any part of finding a drug dealer. There's just one problem. His boss likes the idea and he has a new partner to work with.

Undercover Housewife adds together a story filled with mistrust and a long time unrequited love and with a mystery case. Nikki is a woman coming to terms with her new life and finding that she really didn't like the woman she became. The hero, Josh, is finally fulfilling the dream of getting the woman he's wanted for over twenty years. Add to that the supporting cast of Josh's partner Calvin and his gay antics, and this book is a fine piece of entertainment.

Interesting surprise ending twist in this story keeps readers guessing throughout the novel.

Ryann Phillips has nightly premonition dreams. Most of the time she tries to ignore them trying not to get involved in strangers lives, but something about the dream she had last night is different from the others. In her premonition she sees the murder of a stranger.

Seeing the woman in her dreams in a local coffee shop Ryann can't help but go after the woman and warn her of the coming danger.

Trevor Kearney can't bring himself to believe the beautiful woman's premonition. The attorney is a black and white thinker. If he can't see proof it didn't happen, but slowly he begins to realize that Ryann believes what she is saying so that is enough for him to keep an eye out.

Not only that, but the victim in Ryann's dream, his client, wants him to find out what he can about the premonition. So he finds Ryann and tries to stop the murder of his client. In the meantime he isn't opposed to getting to know Ryann a little better.

I just loved Ryann and Trevor's as the heroine and hero of this book. Ryann is intelligent and well spoken. She isn't some psychic or tarot card reader off the street. She has no idea where the dreams come from and she does the best she can under the circumstances. Trevor isn't presented as some shark lawyer. He isn't even really a divorce lawyer most of the time, but just doing a favor for a fellow lawyer and handling her divorce. He's completely taken with Ryann and isn't afraid to show it.

This is a good read for those who like mystery, suspense with great romance and bedroom scenes.

Description:
You know the feeling, something vaguely familiar … but what if it isn’t something you’ve experienced before, but a prelude to an upcoming event?

Ryann Phillips has it all together. She's a successful architect with her own home and true friends. What she also has, are nightly dreams that eventually come true. Little snapshots into the lives of people she doesn't know.

She's used to them.

Attorney Trevor Kearney finds it hard to believe that his current client is the subject of Ryann’s latest vision, that of a violent murder. He reluctantly agrees to help Ryann prevent this one premonition from taking place. What he doesn’t count on is this particular psychic’s ability to make some of his own dreams come true.

Romance Book Review: Coyote Gorgeous

Author: Vijaya Schartz
ISBN: 978-1-934657-34-8
Genre: Shape-shifter/ Paranormal
Publisher: Sapphire Blue Publishing

YYYYY

Using the Urban Legend of the Chupacabar, Vijaya Schartz brings readers an original mystery.

As described in the book: “Chupacabra?” Madison chuckled. “The legendary blood-sucking creature? Four-foot tall? Hairless? With a spiked spine and a long snout? Hops on two legs?”

In Coyote Gorgeous, Fish and Game ranger, Madison is on the trail of an animal that killed a horse and two deadly dogs on a local ranch. The foot prints aren't anything she's ever seen before and the ranch hand who saw the deadly creature that killed the animals insists that he saw an animal that she only knows as a myth--the Chupacabra.

While searching for clues, the end of the footprint trail leads to local artist Kal. Kal is intrigued by the beautiful ranger and offers his property for Madison to lie in wait for the creature, but things don't go as expected. Along they way indian lure and mythical creatures come to life.

While reading this book I became so fascinated about the subject matter and the legend of the Chupacabra that I had to stop and do some research on the net. Living in California we hear constantly about Big Foot, but I hadn't heard of the Chupacabra. I liked the fact that the author used the legend of the Chupacabra and that I could find out more information on it. Both Madison and Kal were excellent characters. Their personalities worked well together. I even thought that Madison's womanizing boss was well written. Definitely an interesting book for shape-shifter, paranormal and urban legend fans.

Description:
Arizona Game Ranger Madison Huntley discovers disturbing details while investigating a wild animal attack on a horse ranch in Cave Creek, Arizona. As a biologist and wildlife expert she believes in facts and science--not the scary legends frightening the ranch hand.

When Kaletaka, a Hopi sculptor, awakens bloody with no recollection of the night before, he remembers the legends of his tribe.

Can Madison solve the mystery killings and insure the safety of the town? Let alone her own safety? Each step closer to the truth and to Kaletaka unleashes an unspeakable evil, and no one is safe…
