Romance Book Review: My One and Only

Usually, when I get a book this early before publication, I try to wait to review it until just before the book comes out so that those interested will have it available. The problem was I opened the book to read the first few pages and I was hooked. It only took me about a day to read the whole 382 page book, because I just couldn't put it down.

I've read a couple of Kristan Higgins books and I am totally in love with her style. She has a way of keeping the reading interesting, using mostly whit and charm. Here heroines are spunky and heroes are sexy and charming enough to keep the attention of the strong female characters.

In My One and Only, Harper is a divorce attorney who meets her ex-husband again for the first time after 12 years. Her step-sister and his step-brother are getting married. The young couple have only known each other for a few months, despite being in laws for a short time many years back, and Harper is sure her step-sister, whom she dearly loves, is making a mistake.

The book opens with Harper deciding it is time to take the bull by the horns and propose to her longtime boyfriend, firefighter Dennis. Dennis is sexy and in his own way quite charming. He spends most of his time calling Harper "Dude". That should give you a good idea of his personality.

Dennis is nothing like her former husband, Nick. The story is written in the first person from Harpers point of view, but Nick's personality shines through the pages. He never stopped loving Harper after all these years, despite the fact that he had remarried and divorced.

One of the things I love about Kristan Higgins' writing is through even through the hard emotional times she keeps up the whit and the banter completely naturally. Keep an eye out for the book. It will be well worth the read for those who enjoy straight contemporary category romance Harlequin style.

Description:
Divorce attorney Harper James can't catch a break. Bad enough that she runs into her ex-hubby, Nick, at her sister's destination wedding, but now, by a cruel twist of fate, she's being forced to make a cross-country road trip with him. And her almost-fiancé back at home is not likely to be sympathetic.

Harper can't help that Nick has come blazing back into her life in all of his frustratingly appealing, gorgeous architect glory. But in Nick's eyes, Harper's always been the one. If they can only get it right this time, forever might be waiting—just around the bend.

As soon as Candace makes her way on to the "Lust Boat", the Lothario, she realizes that her friends have sent her on more than a simple singles cruise to get her grove back after her fiance calls off their wedding. Lucky for her she has latched to a man who is willing to let her take things at her pace. But when she finds out exactly who Ryan is will that be the end of their budding relationship?

This book is one wild sex scene after another. If one is looking for a book that might hold with step-by-step lessons in the art of love making this one would be a fun start. Well written and exciting sex scenes. A great romance story amongst the sex scenes.

But will she still want him when she finds out who he really is?

This is a beautiful love story about two people who love each other but can't get around the circumstances of living in a small town. There are no sex scenes in this book, and at times the hero and the heroine aren't even together, but you can feel the love the two have pour through the pages. Very well written, can't wait to check out the rest of the series.

Romance Book Review: Ghost From The Past

Author: Carol Lynne
Series Connection: Cattle Valley
ISBN: 978-0-85715-465-1
Genre: Contemporary Romance/ M-M
Publisher: Total-E-Bound

Book number 22 in the Cattle Valley series brings readers back to the original trio of the series, Rio, Nate and Ryan. A long last love of Rio's comes back from the dead and it appears he will stop at nothing to get Rio back.

Back before Rio and Ryan came together as a couple, Rio was with a man he thought he would spend the rest of his life with. Already in love with Rio, Ryan stayed to help Rio pick up the pieces after the "death" of Rio's lover. Now to upset the life Rio, Ryan and eventually Nate, have built together, "Ghost", Rio's once lover comes back.

Telling Rio he wants to explain everything and get their life back to the way it once was, Rio tells "Ghost" he wants nothing but to go home to his men. Not taking no for an answer, "Ghost" follows Rio back to Cattle Valley bringing danger with him.

A very emotional story as Rio tries to work out his own feelings for his past love, and deal with the emotions of finding his place in the busy everyday life of his partners Ryan and Nate. I really like this story because of the way Carol Lynne works to continue to pull emotions from the original characters in her books.

Description:
Book twenty-two in the Cattle Valley Series

Happily settled in Cattle Valley with the men he loved, Rio Adega wasn’t expecting the one call that could bring his world crashing down around him. “Rio, it’s Chet. You’d better brace yourself, old friend. Ghost has been recovered, alive. He’s asking for you.”

In less than a minute, Rio’s loyalties are tested. Ghost. The one man Rio owed his entire life to was alive. Not only had he unknowingly left the African jungle thinking his mentor and lover was dead, but he’d managed to move on.

How can Rio make amends to the man who gave him everything, while still holding onto the relationships he’s worked so hard to build?

This anthology is four stories by four different authors. Each short story features a continuation of each author's series. I wasn't familiar with any of the series except for Lora Leigh's Breed story, Primal Kiss. This novella continues where Styx's story ends with Council scientist Broadmore in custody and his brother-in-law Engllas still on the run. Engllas knows he needs to stay off the breed radar and keep his daught Kita safe from not only the Breeds, but the council and other enemies.

Kita is tired of living with her father and uncle's mistakes and is ready to live her own life. She is under the protection by her father's hired security man Creed. Creed has a lot of secrets. His main goal is to keep Kita safe and close because he knows she's his mate.

This story brings some of the existing story line to a close and continues into the next in line of the series which will be Navarro's story. That book is scheduled to come out in April.

Jory Stong is another of my favorite authors and I'm looking forward to checking out the Skin series that Skin and Bone from Primal was about.

All and all for those who are fans of these authors. This is a good book filled with short stories.

Description:
Lora Leigh is a #1 New York Times bestselling author known for her intense erotic romances.
Michelle Rowen is a paranormal romance author of vampire novels for Grand Central who resides in Southern Ontario.
Jory Strong has had twenty-two romances published by Ellora's Cave and has won numerous awards for her writing. She lives in California.
Ava Gray is the pseudonym for author Ann Aguirre. She lives in Mexico.

Four all-new stories of primitive desire- with a never-before- published novella of the Breeds.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Lora Leigh returns to her sensual world of the Breeds in an all-new novella that explores just how savage, and how far, a man is willing to go in the name of desire. Plus three other stories of irresistible passions from three masters of hot paranormal romance.

Michelle Rowen's Bleeding Heart
Bleeding Heart takes place a few days after the events in Nightshade.

This novella demonstrates what happens when a dhampyr (half-human/half-vampire) is on permanent drugs to control the vampire part of his psyche, but the drugs make him unable to feel anything. Declan rushes his former lover, Jill, to what might be their last hope: a doctor who can tell them how to remove the Nightshade from her bloodstream. Nightshade makes her blood irresistible to vampires, but it kills them almost instantly. In addition, it is killing Jill. Following double-cross after double-cross, Jill and Declan learn they can only trust each other; are they strong enough to resist emotion-resisting drugs and a deadly potion?

Ava Gray's Skin and Bone
Silas is running from the people who used him as an experiment and if he has anything to do with it he will stay under their radar.  When an earthquake hits he has no choice but to save the woman who gets trapped in the rubble, but he never expects to be so attracted to her.

Juneau is in Ecuador to teach English to the Ecuadorian children when an earthquake hits and she becomes trapped.  Salvation comes in the form of Silas, but who is this man and what is he hiding from?

Jory Strong's Angel-Claimed
Set in the same world as Ghostland, winner of the 2010 Readers’ Crown, paranormal romance category.  The story of an angel who crosses the boundaries of desire after committing the ultimate sin—falling in love with a mortal female.

Lora Leigh's Primal Kiss
A good girl all her life got Kita Claire Engalls has always stood up for her father, but now she's not quite sure what's going on with him. When she meets bad boy security specialist Creed Raines she decides maybe it is time to become a bad girl and go after what she wants.

There's a lot she doesn't know about the man charged with protecting her. Creed wants Kita more and his next breath. He knows that Kita is his mate, but will she run screaming when he finds out who he really is.
