Revisiting Harper's Refuge

Refuge
Author: Vonna Harper
ISBN: 1-8436-0-938-X
Genre: Paranormal

YYY

Description:
Freedom from responsibility, from self-control even.

The thought pounds through Magara Force as the high-powered executive runs through the night-dark Florida rainforest refuge. In her mind she becomes she-animal, a wild creature at home in the ripe and savage land, Tarzan’s equal.

Then he joins her. Male and large, his shoes slapping the gravel make her think of heartbeats. She hears his quick breathing, feels the sweat rolling off him, his heat on her skin. The heat travels through her veins, flows into her skull, fingertips, belly, between her legs.
Destroy civilized-woman and let she-animal roar.

Lon Storms, a man just stripped of the control and power that has been his way of life, has his own needs-needs this woman will satisfy.
He’ll take her hard and wild. She’ll give as good as she gets, meeting him muscle for muscle and nerve for nerve, screaming out her climax so the night creatures fall silent. In his mind and body, his running partner becomes an earth creature. Unburdened by modern constraints, they’ll mate-pure and simple.

Neither can comprehend the consequences.

Author Bio From Publisher Ellora's Cave:
Under her "real" name, Vonna Harper has published more fiction than she can keep track of . These include category romances for the major players as well as the 'juicy' stuff. She also penned a series of well-received Native American historicals. One earned her finalist status in both the Women Writing the West Willa award and Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. Before discovering romances, both erotic and otherwise, Vonna 'confessed' all kinds of nonsense for the confession magazines.

When asked about erotica research, she insists, "Of course I've time-traveled to the ancient Everglades, infiltrated bondage strongholds, done wilderness search and rescue, and spent a night trapped in a workout gym with Mr. Universe. How can I possibly write about something I haven't experienced?"

As for day jobs, "I've been a commercial pilot, brain surgeon, worked as a white-water river guide, bee keeper, snake charmer, and garbage collector."

And if you buy all that, she'd like you to check out the bridge she has listed on eBay.

My View:
I was reading some romance notes today and ran across Vonna Harper's name and was thinking about some of the books I've read by her, so I opened my e-book files on my laptop and found this story. It is from a few years back, but not a bad quick read.

To be honest I can't quite get the paranormal angle the publishing company credits this with, but I'll let them keep it. The isn't a bad book, but a little too short for my taste. I liked the characters. Lon is a strong hero, but
Magara's character is a great heroine . The book follows a BDSM theme a bit, but not too much for those that aren't comfortable with the scene. Generally Refuge is a quick read that offers hot sex scenes on an even hotter night. Perfect for the cold winter nights when you need something to warm you up.

New Warren series: Byrons of Braebourne

Tempted By His Kiss
Author: Tracy Ann Warren
Series Connection: Byrons of Braebourne
Genre: Historical

YYY

Description:
London society knows the Byrons are "mad, bad, and dangerous" and every bit as fascinating as their poetic non-relation. Join the fun as New York Times bestselling author Tracy Anne Warren presents the first tale of this tempestuous family—famous for scandal and legendary at love . . .

Orphaned beauty Meg Amberley never planned to pose as Lord Cade Byron's fiancée. Caught in a snowstorm, she takes refuge at his estate. Stranded together, Meg soon finds herself falling under Cade's spell. When the roads clear, she intends to leave, but fate intervenes.

Haunted by his past, Cade Byron has buried himself in the country. Then Meg—with her lush curves—invades his house and his life. With her reputation compromised, he proposes a pretend engagement and a London season where she can find a husband.

But as their charade deepens, Cade can't let her go . . . vowing to tempt her with a kiss that just may lead to forever.

Author bio from her Website:
Tracy Anne Warren is the New York Times Bestselling author of six Regency historical romance novels, including The Wedding Trap and His Favorite Mistress. Her books have appeared on the USA Today Bestsellers’ list and the Borders’ Group List of Bestselling Single Title Romance Paperbacks. She has won numerous writing awards, including Romance Writers’ of America’s prestigious RITA® Award, the National Readers’ Choice Award, the New Jersey Golden Leaf, the Golden Quill, and others.

My View on her book:
Lord Cade Byron is hiding away from his family with a leg injury after being tortured during the war. He isn't in a good place in his world when stranger Meg arrives during a severe snow storm. Not happy to be interrupted Cade allows her to stay for one night. One night becomes several as the snow storm continues.

Over time the couple fall in love, but Cade feels so much guilt over falling in love with Meg because of his past that they go through a lot of rough times before they finally make their way to each other. I loved Meg's character in this book. She was charming and witty, but she had her own shortcomings and at times I wanted to ring her neck.

As I've said before I'm not a great fan of historicals, but I'm really trying to expand my horizons. This one wasn't bad to cut my teeth on. The author's writing style is pretty good and I actually got into the read fairly easily. So while I didn't give this book a five, a three is a pretty good rating just the same since I still working towards finding historicals good reads.

Brotherhood of Blood vampire series

Night After Night
Author: Kathryn Smith
Series Connection: Brotherhood of Blood
ISBN: 978-0061632709
Genre: Historical/Vampire/Paranormal

YYYY

Description:
Centuries ago, this magnificent chalice sealed my fate as a vampire, and now I am its protector. Many have hunted me for it, but only Vivian has accomplished the task. Strong, lovely, haunted . . . I am more attracted to her than I should be, yet her loyalty lies with a man determined to bring about my destruction. But I am not so easily locked in a cage, and now the captive has become the captor.

Though her stormy eyes tempt me, there is too much at stake—not merely my life, but the lives of my vampire Brotherhood. And I am not above using Vivian to achieve my goals, even if it means denying my own heart. The battle to end all battles is just beginning, and I must fight . . . if I could only let my desire be damned.”

My View:
The really truly exciting thing about books is that anything is possible in them. Authors can find myths and tales we learn from childhood and bring them to life by adding their own imagination. In Night After Night, Kathryn Smith tells her tale well. The book tells the stories of vampires and angels, even adding a little imagination to figures related to in the bible, in hopes of adding proof to the existence of vampires.

This book brings us to 1899 Europe, where a vampire, Temple, is being held by Vivian. Temple cannot resist Vivian and after taking a taste of her blood realizes she is more than just a mere mortal. Vivian on the other hand is worried, because she realizes she is attracted to the vampire and that can't happen. She fears she is betraying a man who has been like a father to her, Rupert.

When Rupert sets a trap for some of Temple's friends in the Brotherhood, Temple realizes he must escape and help his friends before it is too late. When he does get free Rupert sends Vivian to follow him, even telling her exactly where Temple will go. Rupert wants Vivian to seduce Temple and make him believe that she is totally his so that he can keep Temple occupied while Rupert closes in for the kill.

As the Temple and Vivian grow closer and Vivian learns more about Temple and herself she worries more and more about what she's doing. Temple finds he can not control his desire for this one woman, but he must in order to help his brothers. Even though neither trusts the other's motives they still manage to fall in love. There are some pitfalls to the story, but it still actually works really well. The ending has a nice twist that readers will enjoy. This is the first one in this series that I've written and I will be definitely back tracking to see what I missed in the other stories.

McCray's First Sin digs into the world of sex slavery

The First Sin
Author: Cheyenne McCray
Series Connection: A Lexi Steele Novel
ISBN: 978-0-3129-4644-9
Genre: Romantic Suspense

YYYYY

Description:
An Elite Partnership

Alexi Steele is determined, relentless, and driven to protect the innocent. She’s a top agent of the NSA’s clandestine Recovery Enforcement Division, specializing in human trafficking and sex crimes. Her current mission: To infiltrate the inner circle of Boston’s exclusive S&M clubs in order to save thirteen young women who are about to be auctioned off to the highest bidders. But Lexi’s only way in is under the “control” of her new partner in crime, Nicholas Donovan.

An Erotic End Game

Nick will do whatever it takes to bring down the billionaire sex-ring mastermind who’s kidnapped his sister. But the games he must play as Lexi’s “dominant” are burning away his icy control, and blurring the lines between partners. Meanwhile, their enemies are closing in as they enter a devastating race against time…bringing them dangerously close to THE FIRST SIN.

My View:
There are 13 college girls counting on Alexi Steele and her team of Trafficking and Sex Crimes enforcers to rescue them from an sex ring in Boston before they get auctioned off to the highest bidder. In order to do that though the team must find a way inside the organizations. That leaves Lexi and her partner Nick. Lexi must play submissive to Nick to convince the bad guys that they are on the up and up.

All would be a normal under cover case, except both Lexi and Nick have revenge on their minds which could get in the way of getting the job done. The story is exciting and fast paced with a dark theme of sex slavery that could be disturbing to some, but very well written by the author.

This is the first of a series of books on Lexi Steele. The character is feisty, lively and spirited. The author left the book open so that we could see Nick again. I hope their relations continues because they were great together and readers could really feel the chemistry between them. Cheyenne has proved herself again a master as a BDSM scene writer.

What would you do if in the future sex was outlawed?

Sex: Outlawed!
Series Connection: Sex: Outlawed
ISBN: 978-1-9068-1195-2
Genre: Futuristic Erotica

YYYY

Description:
In an effort to help free mankind from a Totalitarian regime, two sexy doctors seduce gardening expert Anica Maine into a secret world of forbidden pleasure and sizzling sexual experiments.

Pollution and environmental contamination have made most of the world virtually unliveable. The sick soon outnumber the healthy. Hospitals become overwhelmed. Economies collapse. Governments combine to form a one world power called the “Order of Authority”(OA).

In order to save the human race the OA builds “biospheres” - large bubbles enclosing self-sustainable cities. Only the few healthy are allowed inside. Everyone else is left to die in the polluted Outer World.

To control the biosphere’s populations each human is embedded with a Blocker device, microchips suppressing the human’s urge to mate. Doctors are trained to adjust the Blocker enabling a woman to be artificially or naturally impregnated under the strictest conditions. Sex has effectively been outlawed!

Centuries later a rebel group of Doctors have tampered with their Blockers and begin to experiment with sex. Now they search for allies who can help them with their cause – to eventually free mankind.

Recruited to help free humans from a Totalitarian regime, two sexy doctors seduce gardening expert Anica Maine into a secret world of forbidden pleasure and sizzling sexual experiments.

My View:
This is the first book in Jan's new series, named the same as the first book. The premise behind this series is similar to her Outlaw Lovers series. True to form the author has started off this series in a novella version to introduce the series. This first book give an overview of what the new world has become. It describes a world where people are taught from birth to keep control of all of their emotions and has a chip implanted to keep from wanting to have sex or mate. A rebellion has started to change this. In this story a woman, Anica, who has to show up for her designated time to have a baby, waits too much to the last minute and has to go to a doctor to be impregnated the old fashioned way, by having sex.

When she steps into her new doctors office she meets Zach, her baby doctor who is part of the rebellion. I was pretty much okay with the story at this point. I realize this is a short book and we have to get right to the point, but I ran into a little problem when we meet the next doctor, Noah, and she has to have sex with him too.

Actually the premise of the story is interesting and the new series should prove to be really good once she gets going on it. I really enjoyed the authors Outlaw Lovers series. It too takes place in the future where the world has gone to war when a bio-virus is released and many woman are killed leaving the ratio of men to woman 5 to 1. This causes officials to make a claiming law where each woman must tie herself to five men. The women also has to take a special drug to keep them alive. So far there are four books to that series. The last one Tyler's Woman released last October. All of the books can be found on e-book through Ellora's Cave.

Spy suspense A View to a Kiss

A View to a Kiss

Genre: Regency

YYYYY

Description:
Mystifying kisses . . .

It was a most coveted invitation—a glittering ball attended by all the important people of the ton. But Mariah, a ravishing beauty thought by all to be the catch of the season, never expected to find true love amid the shadows. The mysterious man she meets there ignites a passion within her she never thought possible. When he starts a clandestine midnight courtship in her bedroom, Mariah is scandalized—and enthralled.

From a man who knows just what he desires . . .

Harry Sinclair is a man of secrets who would do anything to protect those in his charge. But when he lays eyes on the stunning Mariah, duty and desire collide. Though every man in London lusts for her, he knows the fiery attraction between them is unparalleled. But in a world where trust can turn to treason and scandal can topple the throne, Harry and Mariah will fight a perilous fight for their precious love—and their lives.

My View:
Harry has a job to do but he can't seem to keep his mind on his work, because all he can think about is Mariah. Not good for a spy who should be keeping his eyes open. Being one of the best spies in his agency he soon realizes that his assignment isn't all he was told it was to be and when he realizes that Mariah's life is in danger runs to save her. The mystery in this book is very well presented and keeps readers guessing. I liked the couple and their love story. I might just start liking Regency era novels.

Needing some more than just long and hard

Long Hard Texan
Author: Summer Jordan
ISBN: 978-1-906811-88-4
Genre: Contemporary

YY

Description:
All Deanna wants is wild, steamy sex with no strings attached and brandy - eyed Jake, a long, hard Texan who's not the 'marrying kind' is the perfect man to fulfil her erotic dreams.

Deanna doesn't have time for a relationship. All she wants is wild, steamy sex with no strings attached. But opportunities are few and far between. Then brandy - eyed Jake, the long, hard Texan, appears on the scene. A rancher who's visiting in the area for only a couple of weeks, he looks like the perfect man to fulfil her erotic dreams. Locked together in a supply room during a power outage, Deanna throws caution to the winds and herself into Jake's strong arms where he gives her everything she wants.

Jake is not the 'marrying kind' but he has yearnings of his own and Deanna satisfies them all. Like him, she's not looking for commitment, so they're totally right for each other. Their hot, mind - blowing sex leaves them lusting for more, but all too soon it's time for the long, hard Texan to head home. Suddenly, Deanna realises that despite her best intentions, those strings are not only attached but cutting right through her heart.

My View:
This book had a great story line going, unfortunately the author didn't get into it. I, like the next girl, like sex in my stories, but sometimes it can get a bit much as it did in this one. I would love to see the same characters in a longer story. Maybe some more time with cousin Craig and his reaction to Jake telling him about the man's girlfriend coming on to Jake. Or even a little more with the scene of finding the condom in the supply room. "Lust Bites" can be a fun short read, but sometimes a little more makes all the difference in the world.

Wanton will leave readers anything but...

Wanton
Author: Noelle Mack
Series Connection: Pack of St. James
ISBN: 978-0-7582-2276-3
Genre: Historical/Paranormal/Shifter

YYYYY

Description:
In the year 1816, the Pack of St. James meets in secret in their London lair. An unknown assailant has begun to prey upon the women who consort with the men of the Pack - two have already died in mysterious ways and a poisoned communication threatens still more. With Kyril Taruskin and his love Vivienne away in the far north, attending to the clan's business in the Russian port of Archangel, his brother Marko begins to investigate - and finds the trail leads to a scandalous beauty known only as Severin. One of the victims was Severin's half-sister, but that alone is not enough to explain her intimate knowledge of the strange case. Well aware how a clever woman can hide more than she reveals, Marko employs all his powers of sensual persuasion, barely able to resist the allure of her amber eyes and softly seductive voice. He has never been outwitted by a woman. But Severin is different from all the rest - very different - and loving her is a dangerous game indeed...

My View:
Not really one to usually like historicals because I find some authors get so in-depth in the time period that they lose something in the romance of the story, I have to say I really like this series. I started reading the first book Wild because it was a werewolf series, which I really enjoy. I was hooked after reading the first one. This second book Wanton didn't disappoint. The first scene starts off hot and sexy and the book just sizzles from there. The author does set the scene in the time period of the early 1800s and follows through with a mystery that can transcend over time.

From the first moment the readers meet Marko and Severin from across a ballroom they can feel the electricity between the two. The characters fall instantly for one another, but there is a rocky road ahead for the couple. Marko has a murder to solve and he doesn't want to mix Severin up in his problems. Of course he fails to explain that to her, and she gets a little miffed at him. The story is fast paced and well written and readers will enjoy watching the couple make their way back to each other.

I've had this book sitting on my shelf for months with the intention of reading it right away, unfortunately things happen and life gets in the way. I'm glad I finally dusted the cover off and sat down for the read. The next book in the series, Wicked, which was scheduled to be out this month, publishing date has been moved to the end of August. I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

The Black Sheep and the English Rose

The Black Sheep and the English Rose
Auhtor: Donna Kauffman
Seriees Connection: Black Sheep
ISBN: 978-0758217295
Genre: Contemporary Romance

YYY

Description:
Finn Dalton is the black sheep of his privileged family - because he's always trying to do the right thing. But do good guys let bad girls go free? Ask British heiress Felicity Trent. Finn should have called the cops when he caught Felicity with a fortune in stolen jewels. But after the hot night they'd shared, betraying her meant he'd never have her again. Two years later, he discovers Felicity scantily clad and handcuffed to a bed in a posh Manhattan hotel room. Finn has three choices. Turn Felicity in. Turn her loose. Or turn her on...Finn Dalton is bad boy personified. Felicity Trent should know; she's a bad girl herself. But for Felicity, life as a jewel thief is almost as seductive as Finn is - and that's dangerous. Because for a girl like her one night is all she needs to get what she wants, anything more means trouble. Now, with both of them after the same thing - the rarest of treasures - who gets there first might be the last thing they want...

My View:
Two years ago, Felicity (Jane) and Finn had an unforgettable encounter in Prague, now they are together again after Finn finds Felicity in a hotel room half naked and tied to a bed in New York City. That's just the first two pages of the book. From there the couple go on a hot pursuit of an antique gem they both want.

The trail for the gem leads the couple all across the United States. During the way, as one would suspect, the couple find an attraction to each other they can't deny, but since Finn is on the side of the law and Felicity appears to be a jewel thief, Finn tries to convince her that the only way they can be together is if she stops stealing. She refuses and doesn't tell him why.

The couple in this books are really great together. The author's writing style helps you feel the love growing between the two. I like the way Donna brings the two together. The mystery in the story is well thought out. I liked the way Donna uses the characters from the other Black Sheep stories, as well. Leaving those who haven't read the stories, an interest in back peddling and finding copies to learn more about them. I had a couple of disappointments but I don't want to spoil the ending so I'll have to leave it like that, except to say I liked Finn a lot, but I was a little disappointed that we seemed to not get a chance to really understand Felicity. I think we missed out a little bit because her character could have been better. Nevertheless it is still an enjoyable read.

McCloud book six from Shannon McKenna

Ultimate Weapon
Author: Shannon McKenna
Series Connect: The McCloud Brothers
ISBN: 978-0758211897
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Description:
The first cut is the deepest Covert operations are what Val Janos is all about. The man is mysterious and sinister, and lethally hot. Only Tamara can understand the strange intensity that drives him to win at all costs - and only she can match it. Val has one weak spot: Imre, the frail old man who befriended him when he was scared hungry kid abandoned on the streets of Budapest. But daddy Novak knows about Imre, and Imre's head is on the block if Val doesn't deliver Tam up to Novak's tender mercies. A white hot passion explodes when Tam and Val get too close. They both have too much to be afraid of, too much to hide. And now, for the first time, too much to lose...

My View:
This is the McCloud Brothers book number six. Not having read the other five books I was a little worried I would have missed something important, especially with characters named Daddy Novak. It didn't prove to be a problem however. I was able to keep up with the stories and the characters without a problem.

I liked the story between Tamara and Val. I was impressed by the authors writing styles and with her characters. Tamara was a kick. She was just the right match for the handsome Val and came across very convincing. The sex scenes were very hot and the couple just sparked off the page. That being said, why didn't I just give the book five stars. Mostly because the story line was very complicated. This isn't a book you pick up and read if you're looking for something fast and action backed. It takes a little bit to keep all the characters and situations straight. If I'd had more time I might have enjoyed sifting through everything, but.... If you have the time give it a try.

Carol Lynne's 10th Cattle Valley book

The Last Bouquet
Author: Carol Lynne
Series: Book ten in the Cattle Valley Series.
ISBN: 978-1-906811-93-8
Genre: Contemporary Romance

YYYYY

Description:
Tyler Manning hates seeing Hearn Sutherland mourn over a jerk like Mitch Lanham. Every week Hearn comes into Tyler’s shop to pick up fresh flowers for his lover’s grave, and every minute spent with the good-looking man makes Tyler love him more.

Since Mitch’s death, Hearn has become withdrawn and sullen. For months before Mitch’s accident, Hearn tried to fight the attraction he felt for his best friend, Tyler. Now nine months later, he learns the truth about his long - term partner, one that will change Hearn’s life forever.

My View:
Another great Cattle Valley series entry for Carol Lynne. I like the way she has been combining stories in the last three books, giving more of the residents some air time. In The Last Bouquet, we finally get to hear Hearn and Tyler's story. We first heard about the pair in the story about the doctors, Physical Therapy, when the car crash kills Hearn's lover, Mitch. Later in Bad Boy Cowboy, we learn that Mitch wasn't as faithful as Hearn thought he was. Now a year later, Hearn is finally ready to let Mitch go and have a future with Tyler, who he has loved since before Mitch was killed.

The book also brings back the series' original characters, Nate, Ryan and Rio when Nate decides to run for mayor, opposite Hearn. Finally we get to learn the all about Nate's background and hear the story he didn't want to get out in the first Cattle Valley series book. Although Carol's been publishing these books every couple of months, she hasn't announced when the next in the series will be out. Let's hope it's soon.

By the way, I always love series that have their own websites. This one's is located at www.cattlevalley.net.

Go Fetch by Shelly Laurenston in print

Go Fetch
Author: Shelly Laurenston
Series connection: Magnus Pack, When He Was Bad—Miss Congeniality
Genre: Paranormal/Werewolf/Shifter

YYYYY

Description:
How much trouble can one small female be to a modern-day shapeshifting Viking? Well…it really depends on local gun laws.

Conall VĂga-Feilan, direct descendent of Viking shifters, never thought he'd meet a female strong enough to be his mate. He especially didn't think a short, viper-tongued human would ever fit the bill. But Miki Kendrick isn't some average human. With an IQ off the charts and a special skill with weapons of all kinds, Miki brings the big blond pooch to his knees-and keeps him there.

Miki's way too smart to ever believe in love and she knows a guy like Conall could only want one thing from her. But with the Pack's enemies on her tail and a few days stuck alone with the one man who makes her absolutely wild, Miki is about to discover how persistent one Viking wolf can be.

My View:
If I were a published author I would want to be just like Shelly Laurenston. The woman knows how to have fun with her story line and plot. I have read all of her books she has listed on her Website and a few others she wrote under another pen name. I was so excited when I heard that she was bringing her Magnus Pack books to print. (I have the e-book versions previously released.) I went out and purchased them right away to have for my collection.

In Go Fetch, Shelly picks up six months after we last saw the Magnus Pack. Conall is still crazy about Miki, who is in denial. She's about to complete her doctorate and has to take a trip to Seattle from her home in Texas. First she stops to visit with Sara now living in Northern California with Zach and the Magnus pack and of course Conall is also there. As expected there's trouble along the way, but that doesn't worry Miki, she'll just pull out any handy gun and start shooting. The story is lively, filled with great sex and the best one liners you'll read in a romantic comedy in a while. The third book in this series is set to be in print this summer. Although I've read Here Kitty, Kitty. I can't wait to read it again and add it to my collection, as well. Great job Shelly! Keep up the good work and we'll keep reading.

Description:
Synergy—Transported a hundred years into the future by an absolutely gorgeous young man, Carly Harris quickly turns the tables on the sexy Sensitive who tells her that use of his telekinetic power leaves him impotent.

He's used a lot of power to bring Carly forward in time, but he still has plenty left. Before long, Carly and Tim Riley move beyond their awkward introduction and discover the reason Tim's libido is so active-Carly is a Synergist, a Sensitive with the talent to increase the power of those around her.

Does Tim really love her, or is he using her for the power she gives him? Before Carly can get past that twenty-year age difference, she needs to learn the truth.

Bold Journey—Bolden, the mixed-species son of Jenna of Earth and Garan of Mirat, is the only survivor of a freak accident while on his long awaited StarQuest. Marooned on a primitive world for almost two years, he captures and then befriends CenĂ©, a beautiful young woman who serves the goddess of her planet. Bold makes an amazing discovery—not only is CenĂ©'s goddess very real to her, she is also the sentience of the planet, an entity who is able to take on human form by sharing CenĂ©'s body. The goddess wants to experience passion, something Bolden promises her if she will help him return to Earth.

Bold finds more than passion with the goddess/woman—he realizes he is also falling in love. But is it with the guileless young CenĂ© or the immortal Lady who shares her body. And Evil stalks them. The makáo were once ephemeral creatures of pleasure, created to give the goddess sexual gratification. Now they are taking on form and substance, as if another entity directs their actions.

In a world far from home, decisions that will affect an entire planet rest in the hands of a young half-breed and the woman/goddess he loves.

My View:
Originally sold as separate e-books, it is nice to be able to get these books all inclusive in a two book set, instead of five books. I liked the first story in this book a little better than the first. In Synergy readers meet a couple who meet under unusual circumstances. Tim brings Carly back from the future on the request of one of his fellow rebels. The couple fall in love quickly. Carly didn't realize that Tim was so young and when she finds out, freaks out a little about their 20 year age difference.

I liked the story but had a problem giving it such a high rating because of a major flaw I saw in the story line. Tim was able to bring by Carly from the future based on seeing her from his friends vision, yet he couldn't find her when she gets kidnapped in the movie. Perhaps I missed something while reading. Aside from that the story was great.

The second story was fine for what it was, but it could have really been read completely separate from the series without any connection. The only connection was being was that Bolden was the son of the couple from book three. I liked the comparisons in the story, but it shouldn't have been part of the rest. Good story though if you get away from that part of it. Sci-fi fans will like the alien and his lion like features in the story.

Pride of Imar—Sheyna of Pride Imar makes the journey to earth because she knows she can help the rebels. She immediately goes to work with Malachi Franklin, the Rebellion's healer, but their work is interrupted when both of them are captured by the leader of the World Federation.
Sheyna and Malachi discover that a powerful bond exists between them during these trying times. However, once they are freed by Rebellion forces, they must determine whether the bond they feel is one borne of love or necessity.

My View: Originally sold as separate e-books, it is nice to be able to get these books all-inclusive in a two-book set, instead of five books. Sit back and imagine an alien race similar in looks to that of Lion complete with a tail, except they stand on two feet instead of four. This alien race has come to earth at a time when rather than be curios about those from other planets earthlings are terrified. They have a kill first and ask questions later mentality.

This future time is where the first book in the Starquest series takes us.
For the most part this is a pretty good series. The author takes us to a place where only the imagination can go. If I had to have a complaint it would be that there was a lot more sex than I would have liked to see and not enough information about where these aliens came from. That is really the beauty of offering a look at an alien race.

The author spends a lot of time explaining the aliens' looks and not enough on who they are and what they believe.
One of the things about sci fi books is that anything is possible. Falling in love and finding an alien that looks like a lion and has a tail may seem odd to the reader, but perfectly natural to the characters. That's the best past of the genre. This book reminds me of the old Star Trek and Star Wars series in a way. The creators were forever creating characters that were almost like human but not exactly.

Those who like sci-fi will enjoy this series and getting to meet the lion-like creatures. Book one sets the scene for the books to come, as well as does a nice job on setting up the reasons for the war that ensues. Book two, by far the best out of the three books, develops a nice relationship between the hero and the heroine, and I like getting the chance to go to the alien's home world. Book three isn't my favorite. A little too much abuse of the female heroine for my taste, but a nice ending to the three part series.

Long Tall Texans Book 33

Winter Roses
Author: Diana Palmer
Series: Long Tall Texans Book 33
ISBN: 978-1-4268-0828-9
Genre: Western contemporary romance

YYY

Description:
Handsome, eligible ranch owner Stuart York was not one to mince words. Ivy Conley, his younger sister's best friend, found out the hard way. During a night's stay at his Jacobsville ranch, Ivy wound up in Stuart's arms. The resulting fireworks singed them both . . . and knowing she was too young, Stuart closed his heart to her.

Now, years later, Ivy is determined not to be treated like a little girl anymore. Although still innocent, Ivy knows she has to fight her own battles, but for some reason Stuart is always fighting them for her, keeping her from harm. And safe in Stuart's arms Ivy feels like a woman . . . a woman who belongs to him.

My View:
Diana generally has a formula for the Long Tall Texans that she's kept going for 33 books and while some readers may be tired of the cookie cutter plot line it hasn't seemed to hurt sales over the years. There are still plenty of readers out there who like the men and women of Jacobsville, Texas and their ways.

In Winter Roses we first meet Ivy when she's 18 years old and dealing with the death of her father. Her older drug addicted sister is giving her a bad time about settling their father's estate, when her best friend contacts her and coaxes her to spend the weekend with her. Ivy is leary of going because she knows her friends brother, Stuart, our hero, isn't pleased with the girls' friendship. Thinking Stuart will be away for the weekend she goes and while she help sooth Stuart's impression of her, he still worries she's too young and blows her off.

Rather than give up on life we next meet Ivy two years later, just a little older but a lot wiser. She's still having problems with her drug addict sister and things are about to get worse. Ivy's story follows Long Tall Texans and Diana's Mercenary series into the world of Jacobsville never ending problem with drug dealers and sets the stage for her next Mercenary series book.

All and all this was just one of Diana's run of the mill books. Not bad, it just doesn't stand out like some of the others. If you like the men of Jacobsville go out and find a copy. Diana is still worth the read no matter what.

Laurenston Pack Challenge first of Magnus series

Pack Challenge
Author: Shelly Laurenston
ISBN: 1-59998-122-X
Series: Magnus
Series connection: The Beast In Me
Genre: Paranormal/Shifter

YYYY

Description:
All Zach Sheridan ever wanted was to become Alpha Male of his Pack and to be left alone. What he definitely didn't need in his life was some needy female demanding his attention. What he never saw coming was the vicious, scarred female who not only demanded his attention but knew exactly how to get it.

Sara Morrighan knew this was the best she could expect from her life. Good friends. A nice place to live. And a safe job. But when Zach rode into her small Texas town with his motorcycle club, Sara knew she wanted more. She knew she wanted him. But after one sexy encounter with her dream biker, everything is starting to change. Her body. Her strength. That new thing she's doing with the snarling. Even her best friends are starting to wonder what's going on with her.

But this is only the beginning. Sara's about to find out her life was meant for so much more. And Zach's about to find true love with the one woman who makes him absolutely insane.

My View:
One of the funniest writers I've read in a long time Shelly Laurenston's Pack Challenge is the first in her newest re-released and expanded Magnus Series. The Shifter, not werewolf, clan was first introduced in 2006 as an e-book and then brought up in Shelly's more recent The Beast in Me book. I love this authors style, there are times that tears were coming from my eyes I was laughing so hard reading her books.

Pack Challenge is a good start to the Magnus series. There we meet Zach who is on the verge of taking over as pack leader. He isn't interested in settling down because all women want to do is think about having babies. Not Zach's cup of tea at all. Then he meets Sara. He just can't resist the woman he has been sent to help change over into her natural beast. She is perfect for him. She's more than a little crazy and Zach's total match. I would give this books a five except it wasn't as funny as the others I've read by Shelly. While I like Zach and Sara, Sara's friends both make the story. I can't wait to read Go Fetch! and Here Kitty, Kitty which feature Angelina and Miki. Both are scheduled to be out in print within the next few months.

Craig offers heart warming story of love with an older woman

Querida
Author: Jamie Craig
ISBN: 1-60504-123-8
Genre: Contemporary Romance

YYYY

Description:
Maddy Terrell is forty years old with an adult son and a time-consuming career. The last thing she is looking for is a relationship. In fact, all she wants is a ride—from Los Angeles to San Francisco so she can attend her niece’s wedding. But the ride she was counting on has just stood her up, and her only choice is to accept a lift from Tonio Herrera.

He’s Latino. He’s hot. He’s also twenty-four, just too much of a stretch for Maddy to even contemplate, no matter how attracted she is to him.

Tonio’s not driving Maddy to San Francisco out of the kindness of his heart. In fact, he has a very specific ulterior motive. Maddy is the most attractive woman he has ever met. After months of flirting, he’s determined that this weekend in San Francisco will finally get her attention.

Then comes the hard part—convincing Maddy he wants more than just a weekend fling.

My View:
Jamie Craig is the psydonum of two talented writer, Vivien Dean and Pepper Espinoza who have been writing together since 2006. I've really been impressed with their short stories. They have a simply style that offers pretty good fast reads. Querida (which means dear in Spanish) is a lovely heart-warming story of an older woman who catches the eye of her son's friend and their eventual relationship. It's never easy being the older woman. Maddy has to come to terms with what that means and to do what's right for her. These authors hit the mark with this novella.

Caught offers romance between two PIs

Caught
Author: Jami Alden
Series: Gemini Men Book 1
ISBN: 978-0-7582-2546-7

♥ ♥ ♥

Description:

Ex-military. Tall. Chiseled. Intelligent and arrogant. And so hot he’s on fire. That’s Ethan Taggart. Male to the max. Toni has to stay cool. Focus on the assignment: the teenage daughter of a multimillionaire just vanished in plain sight. Chasing down leads, investigating every freaky angle, pushing past the boundaries of a hellish underworld of sex and drugs, Ethan and Toni are forced to work closely to stalk an unseen enemy with a taste for cruel games. Risking their lives to save the missing girl is only half the battle. Their blazingly sensual attraction grows every second, until there’s no turning back. Their passion is about to explode…and Ethan and Toni soon find that danger breeds the hottest desire of all…

My View:
To be honest I started this book a couple of months back and then put it down after the first chapter. I'm not really sure what I didn't like about it, but it just didn't catch my attention at first. That happens sometimes, so I put it down and happen to leave it on my night stand. Today I picked it up again and started from where I left off. I won't say I couldn't put it down because it was so exciting, but I had some time on my hands and just kept reading.

Caught is listed as romantic thriller, but honestly I didn't catch the thrilling part. Pretty much it was a nice romantic read. The two lead characters were likable enough and of course they are attracted to each other. The mystery in the story has a lot of detail, but easy enough to keep everything straight. As the beginning of a series readers get to meet the other players in future reads, which were rough around the edges, but not all that appealing yet, maybe they will do better in their own book. All and all this was just an okay book.

Ethan will listen to Aidan’s reasons for leaving when he’s damn good and ready…and not a minute before.

Redemption, Maine. A place for second chances. Will the town -- and Ethan Ashworth -- give Aidan Morgan another shot to get it right?

My View:
I don't read a lot of gay romance, but of those I've read I've seen that generally those from mainstream authors are pretty well done. This is a great example. The issues aren't all about the pitfalls of being gay in this age, which could get boring if done too often. We already know that being gay is not easy even in today's accepting world, but they are about real life issues outside of that realm. In Aidan and Ethan's novel the story line is all about forgiveness and getting over a long hurt. This is something we can all relate with whether we are gay or not.

The story is well thought out and the couple involved works well together. I liked the supporting characters, as well. After checking out Cameron's web site I see that sometime in the future she might come back and visit this series. Some of the other characters deserve a second look, so I hope that happens.

NASCAR romance book offers new scandals

Scandals and Secrets
Author: Ken Casper
Series: NASCAR
ISBN: 978-0-373-18519-1

YYYY

Description:
Tara Dalton is determined to interview Adam Sanford for her new racing biography. Problem is, the enigmatic team owner is frustratingly private—he refuses to have anything to do with the project. Is Adam hiding something? Because if he is, Tara will do whatever is necessary to find the truth!

Sanford Racing is Adam's life. The last thing he needs is Tara's pretty little nose sniffing at the skeletons in his family's closet. But even as Adam grudgingly lets her into the NASCAR world, he realizes he may have made the biggest mistake of all—falling for a woman who could ruin both his family and his reputation….

My View:
I’ve been reading this series since the beginning and the stories are all a lot of fun to read. Readers should keep in mind that the romance in these stories is usually second to the sport of NASCAR. When you read one of these series be prepared to learn more about the fan favorite sport. I’ve been a NASCAR fan for several years now, watching the sport every Sunday. I’ve learned a lot about the sport over the years as a fan, but since I started reading these books my knowledge of the sport has grown greatly.

That being said, even those who aren’t NASCAR fans will enjoy this series, especially now that Harlequin has decided to connect the story and add a little murder, mystery and intrigue. Scandals and Secrets started the off the month providing readers with a glimmer of what is come in the next 16 books.

The book starts at the infamous NASCAR awards banquet, beginning where the last book left off when Dean Grosso won the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Immediately after the dinner Grosso’s car owner is killed. What is to be believed as a mugging may be more sinister.

A few new NASCAR families are introduced in Scandals and Secrets giving viewers a look at some of the new characters they will be reading about in the next few books. This story centers on the Sanford family. The three brothers have grown up in the NASCAR world. The hero, Adam Sanford, is the owner of the racecar that his brother Trey is driving. Another brother left NASCAR under a cloud of suspicion several years before. Each brother will be featured in one of the Harlequin books.

The heroine is an author who is set to write a book about NASCAR families. She chooses the Sanford family to write about. The book itself isn’t bad, but the couple really didn’t work well. I was a little disappointed with that aspect of the book. Being the true fan of NASCAR that I am though, I really liked all the information the author shared about the pre-season setup of NASCAR, so the author scored some points with me there.

As with all first series books, authors have to take some time for readers to get to know all the players and provide the mystery, etc. This doesn’t leave a lot of time for character development. Maybe if this couple had a little more time we would have been able to like them as a romantic couple a little bit more??

Brown reissues Tyler Family Saga

Texas, Lucky!
Author: Sandra Brown
Series: Tyler Family Saga
ISBN: 978-0-5538-0403-4
Genre: Contemporary romance
Reissue in hardcover

YYYY

Description:
Lucky Tyler attracted trouble--and women--like a lightning rod. But the night he stepped in to rescue a mysterious redhead in a seedy bar, he got more than he bargained for!

The lady excited him, challenged him, drove him wild with desire--then vanished without a trace. Lucky was desperate to find her, to brand her with his heat--and when the police were called in to investigate a suspicious fire at Tyler Drilling, his family business, he needed her for an alibi!

Torn between anguish and ecstasy, Devon Haines tried to refuse Lucky's pleas for help, but the reckless blue-eyed devil wouldn't take no as an answer from her... not when his touch could make her burn, could make her his.

Framed by old enemies, Lucky knew his only hope to clear himself rested on solving the crime, but Devon feared when his innocence was proved, she would lose the handsome cowboy who possessed her heart and soul Would the tragic vow that made their love forbidden cost her forever in his arms?

My View:
Texas, Lucky is a reissue from the late 80's, but the style and the topics hold true even in today's world. I loved the story line to all three books in the series and this one is great for a first book to a series. Of the three I would say the second is truly my favorite, but this one had it's charm. I liked Lucky's character, it was the Devon who I got annoyed with at times.

I would have liked to see her character slightly stronger. Of course had she been she might not have gotten into the fix she was in. I also kind of thought that Lucky's denial of his feelings about wanting to get involved with Devon was wishy-washy, but again where would the story be without it. Read this one now and hopefully Sandra will get around to releasing Texas Chase! soon.

Married revisits two earlier stories

Married in Seattle
Author: Debbie Macomber
Re-issue: First Comes Marriage and Wanted: Perfect Partner
ISBN-13: 978-0-7783-2679-3
Genre: Contemporary Romance

YYY

Description:
How to meet and marry a man in Seattle. There are all the usual ways, of course, but here’s how Janine Hartman and Meg Remington did it.

Janine: My grandfather Hartman arranged a husband for me! Zach Thomas, the intended groom, was just as outraged as I was. But Gramps insisted we’d be “a perfect match.” First Comes Marriage, according to him.

Meg: My teenage daughter, Lindsey, had the nerve to place a personal ad on my behalf—Wanted: Perfect Partner. Worse, Steve Conlan, who answered the ad, was perfect, according to her.

Does Grandfather know best? Did a teenage matchmaker get it right? You decide!

My View:
Keep in mind that these books are some of Debbie's earlier works, written in the early 1990s. Both stories included in this book are light hearted and easy reads. They are fun for what they are, but not especially convincing for real life. Doesn't have to be though, just something to read on a rainy winter day for the fun of it.

Reissue on two Diana Palmer stories

Her Kind of Hero
Author: Diana Palmer
Re-issue of two books: The Last Mercenary and Matt Caldwell: Texas Tycoon
ISBN-13: 978-0373773817
Genre: Contemporary romance

YYY

Description:
The Last Mercenary (originally published in Silhouette Special Edition #1417, 09/01)
Micah Steele was all set to retire his gun—until a woman from his past was kidnapped by his sworn enemy. Traveling far and wide to rescue Callie Kirby was less daunting than trying to combat his potent desire for her. The trust between them had been shattered years before, but given a second chance, Micah knew his greatest wish was to convince Callie to forget the past, and surrender her heart.

Matt Caldwell: Texas Tycoon (originally published in Silhouette Special Edition #1297, 01/00)
Though countless women had tried to lasso Jacobsville's most-sought-after bachelor, none had managed to catch Matt Caldwell's eye. But the mysterious Leslie Murry was about to change all that. Despite the fact that his new employee roused his temper as no one had before, she also brought out his every protective instinct. The innocent Leslie clearly ached for a man's tender touch, and Long, Tall Texan Matt Caldwell was ready to make it his top priority to sweet-talk Leslie into becoming his bride.

My View:
Neither of these books were my favorites from Diana Palmer. Although I'm a big fan of her work the heros in both of these books leave a lot to be desired.

In The Last Mercenary, Micah blames Callie for something she shouldn't have been blamed for in the first place. He was still holding it over her head six years later. At the time of the incident he was 30 and she was 16. He was old enough to know that what happened was his own fault and not Callie's but where would the conflict in the story be if not for that. While many of Diana Palmer's heros are alpha males and very rough around the edges I usually like them. Micah just didn't quite have the same charm as many of the others. Callie's character was a little better although I would have wished her to be a little stronger and more put out by Micah's actions.

I liked the story line behind the heroine in Matt Caldwell: Texas Tycoon. It made for a good background for the book itself. The only problem was I felt that Matt Caldwell's character fell a little bit short. I thought the idea behind the two having a conflict because of a misunderstanding in the beginning was good, but went too far. All the hints were there many times that Leslie had been hurt in some way and just when it seemed that Matt understood that he did something stupid again. His actions just didn't fit the mold of a man who dated actresses and princesses. I really liked Matt's cousin's character and wished that Diana would have made a book around him.

Even though I wasn't completely satisfied with these books the author gets three hearts because when it comes down to it I just love her work and just couldn't give her anything less.

Another great in Leigh's Breed Series

Coyote's Mate
Author: Lora Leigh
Series: Coyote's 2
Series Connection: Breeds, Wolves
ISBN: 978-0-425-22633-9
Genre: Paranormal Romance

YYYYY

Description:
He always knew he would betray her...

Anya Korbin was only sixteen when she first came to Del-Rey Delgado—the genetically altered rebel known as the Coyote Ghost. For six years they plotted to free a group of Coyote women kept in Anya's father's lab. As Anya matured into a woman, she and Del-Rey grew close...but on the day of the ambush, he broke his promise and shot her father.

Filled with rage over the betrayal, Anya discovers an even stronger emotion is consuming her mind and body—the animalistic desire known as mating heat. Though Del-Rey feels it with the same intensity, Anya questions whether she can forgive him or trust him again. As they stealthily maneuver to bring the freed Breeds to safety, one question reigns supreme: Can Anya and Del-Rey survive their own heat?

My View:
The minute the new edition to Lora Leigh's series was on the shelves I made my way to grab a copy and I wasn't disappointed. This addition to the Coyote series will keep readers entertained and filled with emotion. Reading Anya plight will bring tears to the eyes of even the hardest romance reader.

I love the way Lora connects her series. In Mercury's War and Christmas Heat, Lora started a new story line featuring American based companies trying to create drugs to use against the Breeds. In Coyote's Mate she continues offering more pieces to the puzzle, but not completing the story. I'm glad that Lora finally got around to telling Del Rey and Anya's story. In Aiden's Charity the author kept us waiting with more information about the couple that we only meet briefly after finding out that Anya is going through the same mating heat that all the other women in the Breed series. The couple works well together and I liked getting to revisit the wolf compound and catching up Wolfe and Hope again.

On the other hand, while I understand the need to finally find a woman who stands against all the mating heat and stuff, I was a little disappointed the author tried it with this couple. I would love to see a story where Lora portrays a woman who just meets her mate for the first time and bam she's in mating heat and then wants nothing to do with him or the mating heat because she doesn't know him and is scared to death of what's happening to her. Let that character petition to be separated from her mate. While I understood why Anya was angry and mistrusting I also saw the couple's growing love even before the mating. That alone should have seen them back together after a few days not months later. Maybe a good person to have mating troubles like this would be Jonas' character. That could be really entertaining.

While a little disappointing, that didn't detract me from giving this book five stars though. I found the book was well written, the story line appealing and readers of the series will enjoy keeping up with characters and the story. For those who haven't read the series, this is a good one to start on. Lora Leigh takes on a whole new meaning to the weres and mating.

Reread on Leigh's Aiden's Charity

Aiden's Charity
Author: Lora Leigh
Series: Wolf Breeds, Book 3
ISBN: 1-84360-626-7

YYYYY

Description:
The forces of survival and destruction swirl in the darkest corners of men’s minds. The nature of the beast cannot be harnessed, and survival is the purest of all instincts. Survival of the species itself goes soul deep.

But can the human heart accept and adapt as easily? Can Charity bestow the love and the acceptance that has always been a part of her, to the man whose very survival depended on the hardening of his heart, of his soul? And can Aiden maintain that cruelty now, in the face of the sacrifices she made? Only time and nature can tell…

My View:
Although this book has been out for a while I added it to the book of reviews because Lora Leigh's new novel, Coyote's Mate, lead characters were first introduced in this story. Although each of Leigh's Breed and Wolf series can be read alone, it would be helpful for readers to get a handle on the series first. Aiden's Charity is a quick read and worth the extra time to get to know the other characters in the series.

Besides that this is a wonderful book. The characters are strongly written, the sex scenes are hot and the author sets the scene well. The love story between Aiden and Charity starts six years before when Charity saves his life. The only problem is Aiden isn't all that happy about the way Charity goes about it and swears to exact revenge against the young doctor. When they meet each other again Aiden has to come to terms with what he felt was Charity's betrayal at the same time save her life. The story is a must for anyone who is a fan of Leigh's Breed and Wolf series.

Reread on Leigh's Mercury's War

Mercury's War
Author: Lora Leigh
Series: Breed
ISBN: 978-0-425-22418-2

YYYY

Description:
There's trouble brewing at Sanctuary. Someone has been slipping secure information to a pharmaceutical company. Now it's up to Ria Rodriquez to pose as a clerk and uncover the leak. And she has no idea of the danger she's about to encounter.

Years ago, Mercury Warrant—who, according to his file, is one of the greatest Breeds ever created—thought he lost his mate, and he's had to live with the idea that he'll never know true bonding. Then he's tapped to protect the mysterious Ria—and finds himself falling in love.

But Ria is a woman of many secrets, and she fears being consumed by her feelings for Mercury. Little does she know that she has every right to be afraid. Because the woman believed to be Mercury's true mate is back from the grave, and she's not about to let Ria—or anyone else—get in her way...

My View:
"They were created, not born. They were trained, not raised. They weren't meant to be free, to laugh, to play or to love. They were men and women whose souls had been forged in the fires of hell..."

The prolog to the first few book goes a long way in telling the story Lora Leigh has created. Mercury's War is the 16th book in Leigh Breed series. These are her explanation to the existence of were creatures. I've enjoyed these books from the first. Sometimes they idea behind the stories get a little repetitive—there are just so many times that one can go through the explanation of the mating heat—but the intrigue, betrayals and characters created through the series keeps it going.

Mercury's War is no exception to the rule. As the story line unfolds readers get to learn more about Mercury's past. We first meet Mercury in the second book of the series, when the original group first moves into Sanctuary and learn that he is the only breed among the group who has lost his mate. Through much of the series Mercury pops up many times until he works his way into the position of enforcer under Jonas.

Leigh does a lot with his character and provides him with a mate he can be proud of. Ria is a smart, strong and viable heroine. She brings along with her the connection of "The Leo" and his son Dane. As usual even in the end the Breeds are still in danger and the story continues. According to Leigh's blog, we can expect to see at least four other books in the near future. This review is written after the second time I read this book in the past several months. I wanted to prepare myself again for the Breeds' world again now that Coyote's Mate is out. I'll have to wait another day though, as I take a quick reread at Aiden's Charity. This will be the first time we meet the character in the new book. I'm so excited I'll probably pull an all-nighter.

Just a quick note: Whenever I read blogs and comments about the Breed series it is always in reference to Jonas and his story. Jonas is a great character, but what about Dane. I’d love to see if he ever meets his mate and what his story is.
