Romance Book Review: Rapture Untamed

Author: Pamela Palmer
Series Connection: Book 4 in the Feral Warriors series
ISBN-13: 978-0061794704
Genre: Paranormal/ Shifter/ Mage/ Demon
Publisher: Avon

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

For those who are fans of Pamela Palmer's Feral Warriors, she's back with a story about Jag. The only word for Jag so far in the series has been "combative". He's the first to instigate fights with his fellow Feral Warriors and offer up rude commentary. In Rapture Untamed fans finally get to see the man behind Feral.

Each of the Feral have long histories, living sometimes three to four centuries, and have been through a lot in that amount of time. Jag is not different.

While the mage threaten to bring back the feared Satanan, the Ferals do their best to stop them. They've called in reinforcements from the Therian British Guard. Leader of the guard, Olivia, has interested Jag since he first met her. He's desperate to have her for his own, but Olivia has a secret and if any of the Ferals or the guard find out it will mean her life. So while it is important to keep up with her goal to rid the world of Daemons and the possessed mage, she also must stay below the radar. That is going to be hard to do when she has a Feral on her tail.

I wasn't sure I was going to like the book on Jag. Frankly he wasn't a character I appreciated in the past, but Pamela Palmer has done an excellent job to bringing out the character and explaining why he acts the way he does and letting the heroine, Olivia, help to change him. By the end of the book I just wanted to continue reading, but unfortunately we're all going to have to wait until Febuarary when the next novel comes out.

Description:
The most combative - and tormented - of all the Ferals, Jag is a predator who hunts alone - until daemons terrorize the human population. To stop them, he partners with Olivia, a flame-haired Therian temptress as strong as she is beautiful. But Olivia is no ordinary immortal. The survivor of a vicious supernatural attack, she possesses a deadly and forbidden skill - one that must remain hidden, especially from the powerful Feral Warriors.

As Jag and Olivia's sensual dance of dominance and seduction gets wilder and hotter, a dark force sets its sights on Olivia, threatening to destroy everything she has vowed to protect. And the only one who can save her soul is the arrogant jaguar shifter she lusts for but dares not love.

Romance Book Review: Her Heart's Divide

Author: Kathleen Dienne
ISBN: 9781426890246
Genre: Erotica/ Ménage/ Sci-Fi Romance
Publisher: Carina Press

[Excerpt]

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Short tale about a happily married woman, Lila, who's boss, Jack, shows up at her house one day claiming to be her husband. For some reason he suddenly believes that she married him several years before instead of his best friend, Ryan.

When Ryan hears the tale and begins to believe it, Lila doesn't know what to think.

This is a fast, well written fun read. It is told in the first person, but it is easy to understand the feelings and motivations of the other characters in the book. I only wish it could be a little longer so that readers can hear what happens a little more into the future.

Description:
Lila was a faithful, loyal wife.

Ryan was her sexy, loving husband.

And so was Jack...?

Jack, however, was her boss, not her husband—why was he claiming her as his own? Lila had been passionately happy with Ryan for more than seven years. Yes, there'd been a moment when she'd first been attracted to Jack, but then she'd met his best friend, Ryan. They'd fallen in love and married. Jack claimed that in his world, their attraction had led to the altar.

And now she was caught between two men—two husbands—in the wildest situation Lila could ever have imagined. But what she wasn't imagining were the two men touching her, pleasing her, caressing her...

About the Author from the back of her book:
Kathleen Dienne has been a reporter, a theatrical stage manager, a ghostwriter, a sloganeer, a video game consultant and a marketing analyst. Fiction seems to be the most honest stuff that she's written.

She is very lucky to have the enthusiastic support of a brilliant husband, a delightful toddler and several elderly beagles. When she isn't writing, she's reading, and if she's not reading, she's taking photographs of the husband/toddler/beagles and making elaborate scrapbooks. Secretly, she practices Italian with those "speak and learn" CDs in hopes of someday moving to Tuscany. So far, the only person picking up Italian with any fluency is the toddler.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

While this book is part of a series it can be read and understood separately, but I would recommend starting from the beginning. Previous characters from the other books play a large role in this book.

After dealing with the threat of a vampire, alpha of the Red Rock Werewolves, Gavin, contacts an old friend whom he thing can help his pack win the war and protect the sanctuary he has built in Red Rock.

Adam has kept much to himself for the past 80 year in the woods of New England. He would have never have left the security of his home unless Gavin had contacted him. He owned so much to Gavin in helping him take care of a mess Adam had gotten into years before.

When he arrives in Red Rock he meets the town doctor, Cindy, and can't help but be drawn to her power and her blood. As a century old vampire he can control his urges. He doesn't need to feed from Cindy in order to survive, but when they come up against some problems and she sees how drained Adam has become she insists. Now the woman everyone at Red Rock wants him to stay away from is the only one he can think of.

Cindy isn't looking for anything long termed especially with a vampire that has a life thousands of miles away, but she can't help but be intrigued by Adam. She wants to have an affair with him and is counting on their attraction staying just sexual, but she soon realizes that isn't about to happen.

Before Cindy and Adam can even talk about making anything permanent they had to fight a pack of wolves who are being controlled by a vicious vampire and hope that they both make it out in one piece.

Interesting and well written take in the paranormal world were there are all different paranormals involved. I liked the authors imagination and her use of magic as the underlining power in all the beings involved.

Description:
New England is ideal for vampire Adam Dubois. His cozy home in the Great North Woods reminds him of a happier time when werewolves and witches were stuff of legends, and he was a simple lumberjack.

Hiding from past failures has worked for over eighty years, but a life debt owed to the Red Rock alpha has forced him to leave his retreat--and come face to face with a woman who challenges and tempts him on every level.

Hiding secrets is a lonely business, and Cindy Shepherd is lonely with a capital L. Red Rock isn't exactly crawling with available men, but her interest in the mystery-shrouded new vampire in town seems mutual. After all, it's only sex--there's no danger he'll dig deep enough to unleash the demons of her past.

Casual flirtation turns deadly serious when Adam discovers that the vampire plaguing Red Rock is using his mistakes as a road map. When it comes to his life, he knows Cindy has his back. But in order to secure the future, they both must trust each other with more--even if it means sacrificing themselves to save everything they hold dear.

Romance Byte: Death Echo

Author: Elizabeth Lowell
ISBN: ISBN-13: 978-0061629754
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Publisher: William Morrow, Hardcover

Purchase Death Echo here.

Description:
New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell cuts a new edge in suspense with this thrilling tale of passion, danger, and international intrigue in which a pair of former operatives must stop a deadly plot that threatens a major American city—and ultimately the world

When she joined St. Kilda's, the elite security consulting firm, Emma Cross thought she'd left behind the blood, the guilt, and the tribal wars that defined her life at the CIA. Yet, trading spying for investigating yacht thefts didn't alleviate the danger—or melt away her professional paranoia. Now, the same good instincts that got her into trouble at the agency might be what will help her survive her latest case.

With some arm-twisting, St. Kilda and Emma are tracking a yacht named Blackbird, a dead ringer for another ship that went missing somewhere between Vladivostok and Portland a year earlier. Emma knows the boat's intended cargo is lethal. What she needs to find out is whether it's biological, chemical, or fissionable. And she's only got seven days to uncover the truth . . . or a major American city will be lost.

Fortunately, she's working with a new partner as menacing and distrustful as the worst enemy she's ever faced—and as deadly. A honed killer, MacKenzie Durand led a special ops team that was deployed to some of the world's nastiest places. But five years ago everything went to hell in Afghanistan, when bad intel hung his team out to dry. The only survivor, Mac walked away and never looked back, preferring to make money sailing high-end boats like Blackbird.

But Emma and Mac aren't the only eyes watching Blackbird. Taras Demidov, an expert in extortion and execution in the pay of the oligarchs running the former Soviet Union, is also waiting in the shadows, determined to intercept a fearsomely powerful arms dealer with the money, weaponry, and connections to alter the geopolitical balance.

Thrown together by an organization of enemies with global ties more dangerous than either of them realize, Mac and Emma must put aside their growing attraction for each other to save more than just their own lives. In a deadly game where the rules change without warning and the line between friend and foe is blurred, the pair must find answers fast—or watch as innocent civilians are sacrificed in a cold-blooded grab for power and supremacy. And even Mac and Emma aren't sure just who will get to the finish line alive. . . .

About the author from her publisher's website:
New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Lowell cuts a razor-sharp new edge in romantic suspense with Death Echo, a thrilling tale of passion, danger, and international intrigue. A breakneck-paced novel that unites a beautiful former CIA agent with a tough and haunted ex-Special Forces operative, Death Echo is a top-rank thriller in the vein of Iris Johansen, Tami Hoag, and Lisa Gardner—and a dazzling example of the superior storytelling that inspired author Jayne Ann Krentz to declare, “I’ll buy anything with Elizabeth Lowell’s name on it.”

Romance Book Review: Jacob’s Ladder

Author: Z. A. Maxfield
Series Connection: St. Nacho’s
ISBN: 978-1-60737-806-8
Genre: Contemporary Romance/ M-M/ Gay Romance
Publisher: Loose-id

[Excerpt]

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

It isn't often that a book will touch so many cords when reading it, but Jacob's Ladder did for me. There were so many sides to this story. First the emotional angle of a man going through the worst few days of his life. Then the scenes of getting to know his hero older brother again and finally moving on to a new stage in his life.

Jacob (Yasha) can normally take care of himself. As an ex-solider he is strong. He's had arguments with his live-in lover before, but this one day he is sick with the flu and his lover to high on steroids. After receiving the beating of his life, Jacob heads to visit with his brother. With the threat of a flu epidemic, members of the bus he's on become worried to see Jacob's increasing worsening flu syptoms and make him get off leaving him at a motel in a small town.

The residents take Jacob into their fold and give him someplace to call home. When he meets J.T., Jacob assumes he's gay, only to realize that J.T. is conflicted about his sexual preference and dates a different woman every night. Still J.T. wants Jacob and comes to him in secret.

The story takes a turn to the hilarious when Jacob's brother comes to town. Dan has been subdued over the past several years, and so unlike the hero image Jacob has had of his brother. Now on the verge of divorce, Jacob is seeing the man he always remembered.

This story hits a many topics including domestic violence, men dealing with their sexual preferences, the Jewish religion and friendship. Be prepared for anything as you turn to the next page. Bravo to the author.

Description:
Jacob “Yasha”” Livingston is having a bad day. First there is the head cold. Then the orgy, the fight, and the hospital. Between that and the bus driver who ejects him — after accusing him of transmitting the Swine Flu — the rest of his day seems fairly vague. Now he’s stuck in a small town called Santo Ignacio and he has a whole lot of thinking to do.

One thing is, when fate speaks in the form of an EMT, maybe it’s time to listen. One man in particular, EMT, Jason “J.T.” Lents, with his shy smile and jade green eyes, seems more like an angel than a paramedic. But Jason has a date with a newer, prettier girl every night, despite the fact that he seems to return Yasha’s interest.

What will make J.T. happy? If J.T. is afraid of his feelings it might be Yasha’s chance to heal the healer. For this couple to find their way, it’s up to Jacob, his new friends, and the magic of St. Nacho’s… in St. Nacho’s 3 — Jacob’s Ladder.

Neither can resist the fiery passion igniting between them …

Neither can imagine the sacrifices they will face, nor the choices they will be forced to make …

King and outlaws, weapons and war: Can love indeed triumph over all?

About the author from her website:
I love writing. I can feel my fingers actually move towards the keyboard. I love everything about it, except the times when I’m dying inside because I can’t make it work. And later, when it passes, I love even that, for its raw, despairing intensity. I love wondering how to put in 'cliffhangers' and red herrings into my stories. I love trying to figure out whose point of view a scene should be in. I love developing tortured characters. Poor things, to be stuck in my psyche. :-) I love figuring out who has the most to lose, then making them lose it. I love punctuation.

I know, it's sick.

Romance Book Review: Devlin And Garrick

Author: Cameron Dane
Series Connection: Seeking Redemption
ISBN 978-1-59578-708-8
Genre: Erotic Romance/ Gay Romance/ M-M

Publisher: Liquid Silver

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

Another emotionally charged romance by Cameron Dane from the Redemption series. In this story, readers get to get a better look at Devlin, Aiden's brother from the first book. Devlin takes a trip to San Francisco with the express goal of checking out a man. He meets Gradyn and falls in love with him in one weekend.

Throughout the book the author does flash backs of the weekend Devlin and Gradyn spend together exploring the emotional attachment the two develop together. Both know they time has to come to an end at the end of the weekend, but years later the two men can't forget each other. When Graydon lands into to trouble his first thought is to go to Devlin.

The only problem is Gradyn must remain dead to the rest of the world. His appearance completely different from the way Devlin remembered him, Gradyn isn't sure Devlin will even recognize him or if he will even want to see Gradyn, especially after the way Gradyn ended things.

For those who like romance books filled with conflict, emotions, gay romance and a great love story this book, and this series so far, have all of that. I'll be interested where the author takes this series next.

Description:
Devlin Morgan and Gradyn Connell have one thing on their minds when they meet in a bar one Friday night in San Francisco. One good, hard fuck.

After the hell he’s been through, Gradyn knows the young man sitting at the end of the bar--with his sweet nervousness and beautiful face--is just what he needs. And Gradyn has absolutely no problem getting up to say hello.

Devlin knows inviting muscle-bound, tattooed Gradyn to his motel room is the riskiest thing he’s ever done, but there’s something in the man’s warm green eyes that tells Devlin everything will be all right.

One explosive encounter in Devlin’s motel room is the plan. Only, it turns out one hot fuck isn’t enough for either man. Dinner afterward leads to another round in bed, and what follows is a weekend together that stirs more emotions than either Devlin or Gradyn ever expected to feel.

Fast forward five years. Devlin has never forgotten Gradyn but he has moved on with his life. That is, until he walks into his sister’s workplace and comes face to face with the man from his wild weekend in San Francisco.

Except, this man is calling himself Garrick Langley. This man is a shell of the man Devlin remembers and hardly looks like the same person. And the biggest kick in Devlin’s gut? This Garrick Langley pretends he doesn’t know Devlin at all.

Devlin doesn’t care what this man looks like or that he has a new name. Garrick Langley is Gradyn Connell, and they both know it. Devlin is a lot more secure in his own skin now, and he wants answers. This Garrick had better look out because Devlin won’t stop until he uncovers every one of Gradyn’s secrets.

Note: This title contains male/male acts of loving, including oral, anal and rimming. Also includes scene with mild bondage and spanking.

Romance Book Review: Stick Shift

Author: Lissa Matthews
ISBN: 978-1607375845
Genre: BBW/ Erotic/ Contemporary
Publisher: Loose-id

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

As a true stock car racing fan, I was delighted to find Lissa Matthews book Stick Shift. This isn't one of the sanctioned NASCAR books, but it read as well as some of the others I've read over the past few years. There was just one main different. This one is definitely more erotic than those that Harlequin Romance puts out.

Lily loves stock car racing and when her friend asks her to come house sit while she is on a trip to Italy, Lily can't refuse, especially when he friend throws in some tickets to a race in the mix.

While at one of the pre-race days, Lily meets race car driver, Cam. Cam is instantly attracted to Lily and does a little flirting. Lily, while she thinks Cam is one handsome driver, sees him as too young for her and instantly conflicted. Cam does everything he can to change her mind though.

This book is filled with race car track action, some cars hitting the wall and lots of bedroom action. Race car fans will enjoy the track scenes. Those who like hot bedroom scenes and seeing those big beautiful woman get the younger hot sexy guys will also love this book.

Description:
An orchestra musician, a private music teacher, and a homebody, Lily’s a full-figured, quiet woman who lives a fairly simple and solitary life. Aside from music, she has one big passion: stock car racing. She’s been a fan for as long as she can remember and makes the yearly pilgrimage to Daytona as often as she can. When she’s offered a chance to get away to North Carolina and attend two weeks of races, she jumps at it. Little does she know what that chance has in store for her…

Cam Carter is one of the most successful young drivers in the top tier of the stock car racing circuit. All over the country, he’s well known to racing fans, loved by some, respected by a few, and hated by others. He’s arrogant, strong willed, and a consistent winner. What he doesn’t have is balance…until he meets a pretty, very curvaceous, and unassuming fan named Lily.

Lily fears the difference in lifestyles, ages, and personalities while Cam in turn, embraces them. Can they find a way to cross the finish line and take the checkered flag together or will the obstacles push against them until they crash and burn?

Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse.

Roan's Fall is a novella that goes along with the Wulf's Den series. After doing several of the Wulf's Den series, Marisa Chenery changed over to Roxie's Protectors, still using several of the same characters from the Wulf's Den series and adding a few more.

In Wulf's Den you meets Roxie, the "chosen one" who is now in charge of all the packs. Roan and his brothers and sister in arms have trained for 1,000 years to protect Roxie. In Roan's Fall, Roan finds his mate when he is protecting Roxie. Roxie, going about her routine, goes to the hairstylist to get her hair done. When Roan sees Ansley, Roxie's hairstylist, he knows he has meet his mate.

Like the other werewolves around him, Roan doesn't know how to tell Ansley he is a werewolf. What will happen when she finds out.

This series really should be read completely. Marisa Chenery is still working on this series. The next one is due out next month and is called Jager's Mate.

Description:
As a hair stylist, Ansley has seen and cut a lot of people's hair, but when Roxie shows up for her appointment with a very large, gorgeous man, Ansley can't take her eyes off him. Nor can she stop her body's reaction to Roan when Roxie asks her to cut his hair as well. But things seem to go steadily downhill when Ansley's curse, her ability to say the first thing that comes to mind when around a man she is attracted to, rears its ugly head. When Roan growls at her to hurry up, Ansley knows her mouth has done it to her again.

Even through the harsh chemical smells in the hair salon, Ansley's scent is like a punch in the gut to Roan. Knowing she is his mate, and a mortal, has him fighting the urge to claim her as his own. Hoping to ease into telling her he is a werewolf, Roan prays he has the control to take things slow. But when it comes to Ansley, he must fight the wolf inside him or risk scaring away the one woman that was meant for him.

Romance Book Review: Fired Up and Burning Lamp

Fired Up
Author: Jayne Ann Krentz
Series: Arcane Society
ISBN: 978-0399155963
Genre: Contemporary Paranormal
Publisher: Putnam Adult

Just finished both of Jayne Ann Krentz (aka Amanda Quick)'s new editions to her Arcane Society series. This series is unique because the author is writing books in both her contemporary persona, Krentz, and her historical persona, Quick. The series is about a special society that deals with the paranormal psychic population of the world in both time eras. Since the government doesn't choose to acknowledge the psychics of the world a group known as the Arcane Society was established during the Victorian Era and works to keep all the psychics in line. The group still exists today working to keep the evil psychic from hurting the rest of the world with their psychic ability.

In every book in the series there is a different hero and heroine, with the common consistancy the J&J Agency. Fired Up and Burning Lamp are not only books 7 & 8 of the Arcane Series but they are also the first two books in the Dreamlight Trilogy.

I was surprised by those who reviewed these two books and said that they saw little of Jayne Ann Krentz's usual style and characters, when I saw her using very much the same characters as she has used in the previous books in the series. I thought both books were well written, it not a little too descriptive. Fired Up seemed to relate a lot of the history of the first Winters' experiments, as does the Burning Lamp, so it seemed a little repetitive when you read them close together. I didn't mind though.

In Fired Up readers get to spend more time with the modern day Jones from the J&J Agency—Fallon. Fallon's character is more defined in Fired Up and he seems more disorganized than he has in previous books. I'm hoping we'll see a book for him soon.

It seem the books a little backwards where Fired Up, book 7, is the modern day version. Readers meet Jack Winter a decedent of the Nicholas Winter who created the Burning Lamp. A devise that the first Winter would hope would amp up his psychic powers, but ultimately made him go mad. Suddenly strange things are happening to Jack Winter and he is worried his is cursed as his ancestor was believed to be. So he goes to Chloe Harper, a Dream Psychic whom, Jack believes can save him before he goes insane.

Chloe is a private investigator. She is worried that Jack isn't going to get the helps he thinks from her, but she is the one Harper who isn't exploitive like the rest of her con-artist family and can't help but want to do what ever she can for Jack. Together they work against the clock to save Jack and also keep one step ahead to the evil group who wants to used both Jack and Chloe for their own gain.

Description:
More than three centuries ago, Nicholas Winters irrevocably altered his genetic makeup in an obsession fueled competition with alchemist and Arcane Society founder Sylvester Jones. Driven to control their psychic abilities, each man's decision has reverberated throughout the family line, rewarding some with powers beyond their wildest dreams, and cursing others to a life filled with madness and hallucinations.

Jack Winters, descendant of Nicholas, has been experiencing nightmares and blackouts—just the beginning, he believes—of the manifestation of the Winters family curse. The legend says that he must find the Burning Lamp or risk turning into a monster. But he can't do it alone; he needs the help of a woman with the gift to read the lamp's dreamlight.

Jack is convinced that private investigator Chloe Harper is that woman. Her talents for finding objects and accessing dream energy are what will save him, but their sudden and powerful sexual pull threatens to overwhelm them both. Danger surrounds them, and it doesn't take long for Chloe to pick up the trail of the missing lamp. And as they draw closer to the lamp, the raw power that dwells within it threatens to sweep them into a hurricane of psychic force.

Description:
The Arcane Society was born in turmoil when the friendship of its two founders evolved into a fierce rivalry. Sylvester Jones and Nicholas Winters each sought to enhance their individual psychic talents. Winters’ efforts led to the creation of a device of unknown powers called the Burning Lamp. And the instincts that have helped him survive the streets and rise to power are now drawing him toward Adelaide Pyne, the bothersome social reformer. A dreamlight reader, Adelaide should be able to manipulate the Lamp’s light to save both Griffin’s sanity and his life.
