Romance Book Review: The mating moon is rising…

It has been a couple of weeks since I've posted, not because I haven't been reading, just because it has gotten pretty busy. One of the series I've been making my way through this month is part of a collaboration between several different authors. It is called Mating Season and features several series of novellas by authors Eliza Gayle, Emma Storm, Elsa Jade, Kenzie Cox and V. Vaughn.

Kenzie Cox tells the story of of the Riveaux, Michelson and Davenne brothers and cousin werewolves living in the Bayou and looking for their mate.

And finally V.Vaughn's Winter Valley Wolves series. These wolves are very interested in finding their mates during mating season, but not all their mates are so interested in finding them.

When she realizes where he is being held she searches him out and rescues him, but now what. If she mates with him she go against the laws of her clan and if she doesn't she's dead anyway.

Lucas doesn't realize what is happening to him. He's been kidnapped, by who he doesn't know. Now he's being rescued and he isn't sure whether or not he should trust the woman. Why should he for all he knows she's working for the kidnappers. The only thing he does know is that he can't keep his hands off the woman and all he wants is to have her in any way he can and then ditch her somewhere. But she knows more than she should about his kinds and he can't just leave her behind.

I've finally had a chance to sit down and begin to read the first part of the Southern Shifter's series. This is book one. I've already read Bad Kitty, book four, Be Were, book five and Shiftin' Dirty, book six. All of the books can be read on their own, but starting from the beginning gives an idea of the rules of the Southern clans. A lot of detail on the rules of the clan on in this first set, by the time Bad Kitty comes along many of the rules have been broken a few times already. You wouldn't even recognize that Bad Kitty was part of this series.

Lucas is a good start to the series, both characters are strong on their own and push the relationship to the limits. Lucas is a short quick read that I wish was a bit longer, but the story continues in book two with Kane's story and helps to clear up some lose ends.

As with many of these types of anthologies there are a couple of really good books, some books are a okay and then there are a couple I just didn't bother with and rushed past. However I'd say there are enough really good to make this book worth the read. The last three books were the best in the line up.

Neither wanting to be alone on Christmas, Niki and Dean get together for a sex fest on Christmas. From the start Dean realizes that Niki is his mate, but when he says so out loud in sleepy passion Niki knows that is her que to leave. Three months later Dean estranged brother comes and tell Dean that his pregnant mate is in trouble and they most go and rescue her. 

Niki has always known that she can't have a normal life and bringing a mate, or a baby in her life would be a disaster. There is something about Dean that she can't stop thinking about and when he pushes himself back into her life will she ever be able to let him go as she knows she should. 

This is a good story with excellent characters, but, even though the author expanded it from the short White Cougar Christmas, there are still a lot of room for more details and a continuing story. It would be interesting to have some more time with Niki's background and family and more time for Niki and Dean to get together more. 

Overall I like this series and this book, I just want more.

Romance Book Review: Eliza Gayle's Bad Kitty

Kitty is have a really bad day. She's been kicked out of her clan, lost what was left of her family, and sent to place where she knows no one. She should be safe, but her day keeps getting worse when she is forced to defend herself against a group of she-cats who doesn't believe she has gotten all she deserves after she is sent into exile. She runs off and even though she's poisoned and half dead she somehow makes it into wolf territory. Unfortunately that is like going from the frying pan to the fire and she meets up with a group of male wolves who now think of her as their possession because she's on their land. Hence her really, really bad day. 

Luckily she is rescued just in time by Rafe the future alpha of the wolf pack. He helps her to get better and they both soon realize that they are mates. That should be a good news and a turn around in her life, but there is still the problem with that other wolf who thinks she belongs to him and no matter what she's still "Bad Kitty" and she doesn't want to get in the way of Rafe's future as alpha.

The author says this is a stand alone book and I think it can be read that way, but for me there just wasn't enough explanation as to why she was exiled for something her father did, especially when in the end she saved a child. That didn't seem to make up for much considering no one, especially not even the she-cats seemed to know about it. So maybe it would be best to read the previous books about Kane and Malcolm where she is mentioned in the books. 

Otherwise I loved the book. Kitty has a sharp tongue and whit. She isn't ready to back down to anyone. After all she's been through she needs to be a tough as she is. I'm a little disappointed with the wolves however. Rafe seems to be a great guy, but really just because this hurt girl, obviously on the run for her life, stumbles onto their land she is theirs to do whatever they want to? Really? And that is their law? Well I'll let you decide about that.
